About the author

In his classes throughout the Czech Republic, Vaclav Cilek has shared his unique knowledge with thousands of Czech and visiting students who wish to understand in a European mirror their own culture and place in the world. Dr. Cilek teaches the town as a metaphor of human existence, aware that sublime questions of mind should not be explained from the mind alone but from the real world. He knows Prague and the Bohemian landscape in depth and his unusual approach to telling the story of place is fresh and engrossing.

With a PhD from Charles University, Dr. Cilek heads the department of geology at the Geologic Institute of Czech Academy of Sciences. He has completed more than 20 films on nature and several television series on mythology and environment. His book, Inner and Outer Landscape, was the top- ranked nonfiction book in the Czech Republic for 2002. In 2005, his writing was awarded the Tom Stoppard Prize.

About the artist

Barbara Froula's paintings reflect her background in architecture and her love of the urban landscape. Her extensive travel in the Czech Republic has resulted in a collection of more than 100 watercolors which were featured in a 2006 exhibit at the National Czech and Slovak Museum. This book is the eleventh publishing Froula's work.

The paintings in the book were done on location during eight trips to Prague and Bohemia. "When I paint on site, I become a part of that place for a time, and the place becomes part of me. It is unforgettable, and when it is most successful, the feelings can translate into something universal."
