With a PhD from Charles University, Dr. Cilek heads the department of geology at
the Geologic Institute of Czech Academy of Sciences. He has completed more than
20 films on nature and several television series on mythology and environment.
His book, Inner and Outer Landscape, was the top- ranked nonfiction book in the
Czech Republic for 2002. In 2005, his writing was awarded the Tom Stoppard
Prize.

The paintings in the book were done on location during eight trips to Prague and
Bohemia. "When I paint on site, I become a part of that place for a time, and
the place becomes part of me. It is unforgettable, and when it is most
successful, the feelings can translate into something universal."
