The figures in landscape were inspired by visits to a Maasai vilage in Southwest
Kenya in 2008/2009. The Maasai continue ancient customs, raising cattle in
deserts and scrublands. They live in community in a large circle of small mud
huts where they protect their cows and goats at night. They make beautiful
sculpture and jewelry from bone, olive wood, and leather. They were highly
social with one another and welcoming to us, greeting us in separate male and
female groups with singing and a traditional dance. They live surrounded by
land in the Great Rift Valley connecting to the Serengeti, where the wildlife
and scenery is breathtaking.
Luxor and Karnak are Egyptian temples, 3500 years old and four kilometers apart,
connected by a pathway lined with sphinxes. The temples are monumental and
exquisitely carved, their columns designed with stunning nature-inspired
motifs.
At the end of the day in Giza, men rode on horseback from the pyramids.
